Conditions and symptoms

General gastroenterology and focused subspecialty care

The practice sees common gastroenterology referrals as well as more specialised oesophageal, inflammatory, and immune-mediated disorders. While Associate Professor Basnayake has recognised expertise in disorders of gut-brain interaction, private-practice referrals are not limited to that area.

Digestive symptoms

Symptoms such as bleeding, bowel change, reflux, dysphagia, abdominal pain, or iron deficiency often need structured clinical assessment to determine whether reassurance, medical treatment, endoscopic investigation, or longer-term specialist care is appropriate.

  • Abdominal pain
  • Altered bowel habit
  • Diarrhoea
  • Constipation
  • Rectal bleeding
  • Reflux
  • Swallowing difficulties
Specific conditions

Some referrals involve an established diagnosis, while others concern confirmation, clarification, or reassessment after symptoms have changed. Investigation and treatment planning are guided by the referral question, previous testing, and the wider clinical context.

  • Coeliac disease
  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Eosinophilic oesophagitis
  • Oesophageal disorders

Where appropriate, assessment may include endoscopy, pathology review, imaging review, or a staged management plan developed with the referring doctor.
